That there is a forum dedicated to this movie that otherwise slipped by ..

I think it was brilliant. And I only saw it cause it was on netflix stream. Wow.. we were arguing about interpretation for a week over it.

I keep thinking of him waving his hand over the motion sensor .. suddenly it all comes together.

Loved it.. thanks for the forum too.

14 years ago I experienced what they call an ‘awakening’, it happened shortly after I worked at the Dome of the Rock Jerusalem (as a roofing lead worker during the refurbishment their, in 93/94).
Weird? Well, I only saw the film two days ago (4/10/09), and it was so near to what I ‘saw’ it made me feel a bit queasy.
But it’s just a movie!
That would a an easy cop out, the fact is that it began as an idea in someone’s mind, and then you might ask where do ideas come from, where to minds come from, and yes we go knocking on the door of Hawking’s Big Bang?
Nothing is what it seems, that’s a fact! I’ve already seen that, and yes the world is a kind of play and learn scenario, a mindscape or shared dream. The physical is an illusion, not that you can escape it so you may as well call it ‘real’.
Play and learn? I won’t expound too much, I want to keep this post short, but take the movie ‘The Matrix’ for instance. That movie as a play and learn tool went a fair way in showing us that the human experience is not out there in the world, it’s just a set of signals interpreted by the mind. Which can help in the understanding that there need not be a physical element to existence per se, as long we are all tapped into the same ‘server’ and are governed by the same rules, we will all share a common reality that seems to be real ‘physically’. The problem with the physical is that of, ‘Where is it?’, whereas if everything is just conscious energy then it need not ‘be anywhere. So the problems of where and even when are solved, I could go on and on about this subject, (endless cycles in a mind due to the paradox of it being both finite and infinite) due to what I ‘remembered’ when I woke, but that’s not why I’m writing here.
Years before this movie, I experienced aspects that were shown in it. I have had people, some random, people that I didn’t even know coming up to me and saying stuff to me suggesting that I don’t really belong here per se, and then when I press them on it they don’t even remember saying it. As if they were being controlled by someone ‘beyond’.
Someone like Sarah, although it’s as if she can walk in and out of what I call ‘drones’.
I didn’t actually see the entire movie, I just caught the end, so I suppose the drones as I call them would be like sevens or six’s or something, with the number relating to how ‘aware/evolved’ you are.
If you think that movie was weird, you should take a look at my life! Coincidence plagues me, I see number patterns everywhere and there is total manipulation, I am definitely not steering my own ship.
And yes I hate the world! Yesterday I sat and watched the news where Simon Cowell had spent a million on a birthday party when people are starving all around the world it makes my blood boil, really!
He is like a 3 or something, a real piece of shit!

I’ve said enough, enough for other ‘nines’ to recognise, although the interference is that anyone less than a nine by nature all say they are nines because they have big egos.

Of course the film is not an exact truth anymore than The Matrix was, it’s play and learn, but how do you get out of here?

I have always believed that there are things out there that we can not explain or even completely understand. Signs. Sometimes even if we don't understand them we still need to pay attention to them. I have always had a connection to the # 9. Or is it connected to me. I look for the Nines or sometimes they find me. In sports I always ended up wearing the # 9. Addresses or places I have needed to go to would either be a variation or 9 or added up to equal 9. Those are just a few examples. I also believe in timing. Sometimes things don't happen to you or even show themselves until it is the right time. For instance...... I had never heard of this movie until now. Even though I am a Ryan Reynolds and own movies with him in them I had never come across this movie. Onces again it spoke to me. When it needed to be heard. Also keep in mind that we are coming up on September 9th, 2009. Which I am looking forward to. Some call me crazy and some just blow it off. But I feel and live the 9. I can go on and on but I will stop for now and just ask........ is the anyone else out there who feels the 9 as I do? Or can understand what I mean?

Microsoft's contribution follows close on the heels of the release of its Hyper-V driver to the Linux kernel under GPLv2. The free Live Services Moodle educational website builder for teachers and students can now be tied in with the Live@edu service for email, calendars and IM. Teachers and students can use their Windows Live IDs to sign in to Moodle, allowing them access to the Live Hotmail, Live Calendar, Windows Live Messenger and, finally, the Bing search engine.

Moddle inventor Martin Dougiamas announced the module in a way quite uncharacteristic for Microsoft, thereby also highlighting an option deviating from their customary practices: "Since (from a programming point of view) Live has the same APIs as any Exchange server, I think a lot of Moodlers will be using this code to integrate Moodle closely with their private Exchange servers as well."

Microsoft linked the plugin from its Education Labs site, about which corporate VP for the Education Products Group, L. Michael Golden, posted a blog. The current OSCON conference in San Jose CA also provides a video about the plugin.

My favorite part of the movie was part three in the scene where Mary and Noelle watch the video and Mary is scared and then finds out that Noelle went missing. Then remembering from part one where Gary finds a little girl ( who is Noelle but he doesn't know it ) who is saying that mom is waiting back at the car in sign language. Meaning Noelle travelled between universes =o

Some very good interpretations here.

Having seen the film only once (just now), it seems in large part a comment on the amount of abstract and un-real "worlds" there are existing today for us to engage in - video games, internet (hello!), television, films (arghhh). It seems no accident that the film ends on a beautiful depiction of a happy family, interacting in the real world. This is the best of all possible worlds (Leibniz) because it's the only real one; the only one that can satisfy the soul, ultimately. And yet it's the one most of us are addicted to escaping from. How much of your life do you spend in abstract worlds?

On the other hand, we could interpret the film through some deeply mystical filters. I believe in some eastern disciplines - buddhist meditation, yoga practice (it's not just exercises you know!) - people who practice them for many years come to see that the mind creates SO much more of the "reality" we believe is hard and fast. The mind filters and distorts, and only allows in data that is already somewhere on it's conceptual maps (so it's actually impossible to see abjectly new things). And so in this sense, the film can be telling us, in an entertaining, funny, emotional, filmic way of this supposedly mystical truth (I don't quite grasp it myself, but I've read of it). This isn't the same as the philosophical idea of solipsism; it is an infinitely more subtle mystical idea that perhaps John August has grasped. Perhaps.

It was actually a refreshing challenge to have a film that doesn't wrap itself up in a tight, logical bow. Part of me certainly wanted that (we are trained on that from a million US films), but I think this film probably doesn't have ONE interpretation (perhaps I'm wrong) and that's got to mark it out as pretty special.

I found the almost sci-fi parts of the film a bit irritating - that humans are sevens (hence this forum), this 'creator' a nine etc. It was novel, but I am hoping it is fare to please the audiences who desire some sort of logical explanation. I prefer to think that this film is hinting at mystical ideas - as much as a pseudo-mainstream film can.

Overall, very challenging stuff. Top marks.

Let me explain, just so it can be seen in an artisitic point of view. The Green Bracelet was circled twice around the wrist and then tied. A not is the representation of bringing everything together. The two loops represent the other two realities he is tied to that we see... So there is him, and his two other relaties. The idea for a wrist is good because its right ner one of his life lines (major blood lines)... looking for the signs is easy, seeing the signs is the hard part.

Ok. I just saw this movie last night and thought it was great. I've been a fan of Ryan Reynolds since I saw the movie where he plots fake heists with his friends in Toronto (Foolproof). I don't think I've ever stopped and replayed so many scenes in a movie before. I think I'm gonna watch it again with the commentary, along with all the DVD extras. Anyway, here's what I couldn't figure out.

10 = God
9 = Super Human
8 = Koalas who control weather and are telepathic
7 = Humans
6 = Apes

I was reminded of the fates in Greek mythology. After doing some research, I found out that the fate who spun the thread, Clotho, had a Roman equivalent--Nona, which means ninth. The fate Atropa/Morta carried shears, which may be what the scissors were alluding to. I suppose the knot-tying could represent the other fate, Lachesis/Decima, since she was the one who measured the thread. However Lachesis/Decima and Atropa/Morta represented the numbers 10 and 11 respectively. Since the movie dealt with creation and escapism into a generated world, I suppose Clotho/Nona--"nine" became the focus of the movie. Just a hypothesis :)

Allow me to give you a more comical interpretation of the movie. I posted this on another thread, but I think it would be worthwhile to post it on this one too. But my real "Aha!" moment was quite hilarious and quite bizarre. But after doing a little research I got some shivers. If you think really hard, what this movie is ULTIMATELY saying is that Ryan Reynolds is G/G/G because they've placed people that we know in our world (Melissa and Dahlia) into the movie.

Allow me to explain:

In reference to the second act, Melissa and Dahlia are actual people that we know of in our world. But there is no tv show called crim9 or a reality-tv show based on a pilot episode in our world. Therefore, our world is not the second act, but a variation of it. We are merely living in a reality much like the one in the second act, except that G/G/G is Ryan Reynolds instead of Gavin (hence the absence of the tv shows). Without using Melissa or Dahlia's real name, then there is absolutely no way we could come to this conclusion. But by doing so, the movie is actually suggesting that our reality is much like theirs, with Gavin and Ryan being the only difference.

[I suppose you could argue that the second act's reality also had a Ryan Reynolds, but that would mean there would also be a movie called "The Nines" in that world too which would lead Melissa and Dahlia to -- ouch! my head hurts]

If anyone has bothered to look up what the name Ryan means, it's quite eerie:

http://www.behindthename.com/name/ryan

http://www.weddingvendors.com/baby-names/meaning/ryan/

Are you totally freaked out yet? :)

Still don't believe me? Look up Ryan's last name, but omit the S.

http://www.behindthename.com/name/reynold

http://www.weddingvendors.com/baby-names/meaning/reynold/

NOW ARE YOU FREAKED OUT?! (I guess his favorite letter is R now).

The movie is the most deceptive form of propaganda: tell the actual outrageous truth because no one would believe it anyway, just so that people will think it is entirely fictional... or is that exactly what I'm doing?

LOL, you could easily play around with that idea actually:

Yes... Ryan is yet another manifestation of G- (but I guess he decided to break out of the whole G- thing this time), and our reality as we know it is actually just another variation created by Ryan. Allow me to explain:

According to the second act, Melissa and Dahlia are actual people that we know in our world. But there is no tv show called crim9 or a reality-tv show based on a pilot of a series in our world. However, there IS someone that looks a LOT like that Gavin guy and we all know who THAT is. G/G/G just decided to write another world--our world, a lot like the world in the second act, but just a little differently, and Ryan is the name G/G/G goes by now (I will explain why later).

By placing real-life people into that movie, what this film is ultimately insinuating is that Ryan Reynolds is G-incarnate and we are merely the 7s of this world he created. (Do you suppose the G- could be G-OD?) If anyone has bothered to look up what the name Ryan means, it's quite eerie:

http://www.behindthename.com/name/ryan

Are you totally freaked out yet? :)

Still don't believe me? Look up Ryan's last name, but omit the S.

http://www.behindthename.com/name/reynold

I believe that this movie is an allegory for what many of the Eastern ideas call enlightenment, oneness, Self realization, etc. Here is how I have come to this conclusion:

PART ONE: THE PRISONER
In the Eastern ideas, mainly Hindu & Buddhist a recurring theme is that we are "prisoners" to the trappings of the mind and all of it's creations including, but not limited to, the very world which we perceive as reality. In PART ONE Magaret/Melissa/Mary tells Gary/Gavin/Gabriel that he has created everything around him and that he can destroy it with a thought. This very closely follows the idea(s) that the world is an ilusion created by the Ego and that what we experience is purely sensual (interpreted & perceived by the senses) and therefore subjective to the experiencer. It should also be mentioned that in PART ONE, Gary/Gavin/Gabriel is very lost and self-destructive. Many people reach this state just prior to embarking on a spiritual journey that leads to realization of Self. Gary/Gavin/Gabriel makes the decision to take that journey when he crosses the line.

PART TWO: REALITY (TELEVISION)
In this portion Gary/Gavin/Gabriel has to face the hard truths about himself and his subsequent "new" life. In all spiritual journeys, the seeker must take a much needed look at himself and his actions to determine what needs to be repaired/cut away. The life before the journey is so superficial (hence the life of an Hollywood actor), but there are always clue (hence the note "look for the nines", the software titled "knowing", the sign and the little girl at the bus stop, and the people around him). In PART TWO Gary/Gavin/Gabriel must face his greatest adversary to enlightenment...himself. Within him are characteristics of the Ego we all struggle with: vanity, pride, materialism, etc. He is at a pinnacle and his wolrd must come crashing down before he can make the necessary changes to reach the level of enlightenment.

PART THREE: KNOWING
In part three, it becomes apparent who the two women in the film symbolize. Maragret/Melissa/Mary represents the trappings of the world. As Gary/Gavin/Gabriel says, "I loved you the best". She stands for all that is hard to seperate from even when there is a "knowing" of who/what we are. Susan/Sarah/? is the depicition of The Guru. The Guru is the one who leads the seeker away from the trappings and out of the disillusioned state. It is often said in Eastern ideas that "when the student is ready, the teacher will appear". InPART THREE, Gary/Gavin/Gabriel has come to that point and is walking alone when Susan/Sarah/? suddenly appears. In PART THREE Gary/Gavin/Gabriel has attained enlightenment and his Guru leads him away from the worldly things. He comes to the realization of Self at that point and the numbers signify this.

THE NUMBERS:
The numbers seem to be a system of explaining where one is in the spiritual journey. Gary/Gavin/Gabriel is a 9, meaning that he need only destroy the ego "with a thought" and he would end the cycle of reincarnation. He is openly defiant in PART ONE and therefore has to be re-born into Gavin. He still doesn't quite get it right in PART TWO so now he must become Gabriel. So the 9 means the highest level of spiritual attainment possible before returning to what Eastern ideas call "oneness" or the all-pervading consciousness. The 10 is just that...is is the all, te everything that has always existed and always will. We are all 10's to some degree, yet we cannot fully attain it until we destroy the Ego and renounce it' trappings. It is interesting that Gary/Gavin/Gabriel does not have to leave the world during his journey, in other words he does not have to become a monk and give up all of his possesions, he merely just needs to see the world for what it is, or more importnantly what it is not and become what he has been all along.

I'm so boggled, this movie just messed with my head.

I would like to think this is just the mind of a crack-head. Maybe this is what they experience. But that doesn't work because of the ending. So it's just some total mind-**** which is why I feel mind-****ed. Makes sense to me, but I don't like the feeling of being mind-****ed.

All I can say, besides what I've just said, is: "ow".

Intended or not, John August presented an entertaining exposition of an idea called "solipsism". This is the idea that life, reality and experience are phenomena of the mind, unrelated to any true extra-experiential existence. This idea is fundamentally absurd and irrefutable as such, but can nevertheless be compellingly argued from a negative stance.

Inherent to the concept of reality as a construct of the mind is the fact that at one point in time you experienced reality in a manner far different from what you know today. Can you remember being in the womb? It was warm and calm. Pain could only come from your own subconscious, unfulfilled desires and unwanted sensations. Then you were "born." But why do you trust what you have been told about your birth? Your parents were there, right? So you have been told. Do you remember?

Child psychologists acknowledge that even several months after birth, an infant still lacks the ability to recognize shapes, patterns of color or movement. What is the infant seeing? A convoluted mess of something completely unknown. As we observed these shifting shapes, colors, and patterns of movement, we began to assosciate meaning with each one. This process essentially builds an entire system of perspective which naturally reinforces itself. After all, the process of "learning" is about questioning, but questions themselves are never questioned. We simply ask a question, get an answer, file and continue.

But what is a question? To question the nature of questions is to look into a mirror and stare yourself down. Try it sometime. Stand in front of a mirror and stare into your own eyes. Do not attempt to distract yourself mentally, but rather allow your mind to mull over what it sees. Think about yourself as you stare into yourself.

Tell me if you can make it even one hour. The average human can do many painful and annoying things for an hour, but staring at itself in a mirror can be confusing, terrifying, and even maddening. This is because you do not understand yourself in the least degree. What can you say about yourself that does not depend on your willingness to accept its' premise?

The sad truth however, is that when you realize this about yourself, you will find what you have believed and what you have been willing to accept are not easily dismissed. You have created rules for yourself, rules that you will never break free of until you are willing to shed your skin, your name, and your "identity". These are not who you are, they are what you wear. You are something else entirely.

I could attempt to dissect "The Nines", but like any surgical operation, I will only be as effective and exact as my tools. As it is, the English language is entirely insufficient to describe anything with accuracy beyond it's own insufficiency.

I will only say that I hope you have taken something away from what I have written above.

I guess I found my own meaning to the movie. I thought the central theme was "You create your own reality." You make your own world and it is up to you to make it work the way you want. The way you want is decided at your higher level of being. I felt that the Melissa characters were representative of a more helpful person, encouraging you to the places you want to be and the Hope Davis characters were the people who try to "make you see how things are, to be realistic, do quit dreaming and come back."

I guess it is a more abstract interpretation. The Ryan Reynolds characters were always happiest with the Melissas and more forlorn when with the Hopes. The only time he was pleased with the Hope charaacters is when they were "easing" him into their truth and in the end he was the most upset when he chose the Hope way, obliterating everything in part 1, completely lost at the end of part 2 and saddened in having to leave Melissa in part 3.

I came to this site looking for some ideas of what some parts of the movie meant (I just saw it tonight), but I think you guys REALLY overdid it with the "hidden meaning" party.

I think the movie is pretty clear (in my opinion) in that it is about the addiction people have to video games. Anyone who is, or has been, deeply addicted to a video game (such as myself) will see this movie and understand it quickly (at least the way I understood it).

I'm not totally clear on a few things in the movie, but I'll just summarize my ideas below:

- Gary/Gavin/Gabriel (let's just call him Gary) is Melissa's Avatar in the "game". I personally always choose hot female characters for my video game characters, so it is no surprise that Melissa chose a hot guy for hers, and is living out a fantasy of being the publicist of someone that looks like Ryan Reynolds, then his best friend, and then his wife. It is clearly a case of the "SIMS" (the game).

- The reason why Gary (who is controlled by Melissa in real life) is a "9", and God (the real-life God) is a "10", is that WE control everything about the video game we design, whereas God controls us in real-life. I think maybe 7s are NPCs (non-player characters, or in other words "computer characters"). Telepathic Koalas might be a jab at NPCs. Im not sure. I make fun of how stupid NPCs are designed all the time, so I can see how a Telepathic Koala would be higher up the food chain than stupid NPCs.

- It seems that Sara is another real-life player (I can't tie this in with the ending of the movie though...), but it seems that she is, conceptually at least, another real-life player that is seeing someone playing endlessly (like if I saw someone in my World of Warcraft guild always online everytime I came on, I might become a bit concerned for him/her), and she tries to get through to him (or her, since we are talking about Melissa here) to stop playing the game. Clearly, Melissa is so addicted and deep into the game that she forgot that she is really a woman.

(let's call the Real-Life Melissa "MelissaRL", and In-Game Melissa "MelissaIG" for easy reference)

This would explain why MelissaIG calls Sara a "9" (she is afraid that another real-life human will succeed at getting MelissaRL to stop playing). MelissaIG is a "7" because she is not the real Melissa...she is just an NPC (a computer character).

Heck, MelissaIG could also be the director's symbolic sum manifestation of all MelissaRL's desires to live in a fantasy world (in other words, the desires that lead to our addiction to games), which is why Sara needed to get Gary away from MelissaIG at least for a short while in order to try to reason with him/her.

- The bracelet seems like nothing more than a symbolic "log-in" or username/password.

- The 3 "Garys" in the movie, to me, are just like making 3 characters in an online game (such as World of Warcraft, Lord of the Rings Online, Everquest, etc). They are just three different characters that Melissa plays. It seems that these three characters are used by the director to depict stages a real-life video game addict goes through.

- In Part One, Gary burning the children's clothing is probably symbolic of MelissaRL missing out on her daughter's childhood. Many parents who are addicted to video games often miss their children's growing years, playing the game endlessly. It might also be an expression of how stupid the addiction is...like buying dirty crack off the street, hanging out with a dirty street hooker, and being a complete idiot.

- Part Two seems to be the "climax" of the gaming years. Playing a SIM, getting all excited about the big contract, and so on. Im pretty sure that things falling apart for him was not symbolic, but nothing more than Sara sabotaging him to get him to come back to the real-world.

- Part Three seems to be the "burnout" stage (which happens after many many months of endless gaming). He has a beard, his car burns out, the colors are faded. Seems pretty clear to me.

A thought: Maybe the water was a virus...same virus Sara gave her gamer ex-boyfriend?

The one thing I don't understand, and the reason why I came to this forum in the first place, is how she "connected" to the game when she came out of it. Did the director simply not want to put her in front of a computer so that the movie doesn't become "obvious"? Or maybe the director wanted to create a parallel between computer gaming and one's imagination (since what is a video game but a dots on a screen that let you visualize an imaginary world more easily)? Or maybe she was literally just stuck in her imagination (weak idea, but maybe)?

But her family, her husband specifically, did not seem "relieved" to see her "back".

I just don't get the ending.

Either way, great movie and I can relate to it in many ways. Let me know your thoughts.
