Ok. I just saw this movie last night and thought it was great. I've been a fan of Ryan Reynolds since I saw the movie where he plots fake heists with his friends in Toronto (Foolproof). I don't think I've ever stopped and replayed so many scenes in a movie before. I think I'm gonna watch it again with the commentary, along with all the DVD extras. Anyway, here's what I couldn't figure out.

10 = God
9 = Super Human
8 = Koalas who control weather and are telepathic
7 = Humans
6 = Apes

What are one through five? Did I miss something? Anyone have any thoughts?

I just learned of this film through my husband. He learned of it serendipitously through trailer trolling. Wish we would have seen it in Austin, but I wasn't ready for it then, so it's perfect that I saw it today. I'd love to convo with John. I got it. Boy did I. Now I'm dressed to the Nines. Some would say I'm crazy for saying that. Maybe I am... ;)

1. I used the mpeg footage since I'm running out of space on my computer.
2. I used iMovie HD. Would have loved to use Final Cut Pro, but, unfortunately, it's a little pricy.
3. Powerbook G4

- I'd say the largest challenge for me was with the music and intense sound effects. I didn't have any atmospheric creepy music, so I had to cut together pieces of intros to random songs and mess around with the volume levels to try and make something that sounded reasonable.

- I'm used to cutting stuff together based on music I have, and I've learned it's much harder to do cuts with no background music other than the raw dialogue, as until you add more atmospheric sound, it looks dissapointing and raw. Also, I was afraid to make quick cuts within the middle of the footage for fear that people wouldn't get what was happening, but, I should have taken the risk as the middle of my video ended up being really bad, and a terrible transition from the beginning and end, both of which I thought I did a good job on.

- Editing can take a crapload of time, and the intense sound effects with trying to time it perfectly and listening over and over again can give you headaches at 3am.

MPEG4
Final Cut Pro
Combustion
BIAS Peak
Quicktime Pro
Powerbook G4(generation model-T)

Pretty much every decision I made hinged on time and resources, I guess if I were preparing to edit this five years ago, I would be stacked in terms of software and equipment... but unfortunately, the last few years have not been prosperous in terms of ability to upgrade, so I'm very behind in terms of technology. Another couple of days to work with it my result would have been a lot better, but it is what it is ... So I used the MPEG4 footage, I thought it was a good decision at the time, because I'm at the mercy of the hotel across the street for a decently speedy internet connection - Sunday afternoon, was the window when it decided it wanted to work, so that's when I got the footage -- most times I spend my evenings staring at spinning orbs waiting for pages to load.

I have an old G4 Powerbook and didn't anticipate the rendering time it would take for the MPEG4 footage in Final Cut Pro, so that sucked up minutes -- I have an old version of FCP... in a past life I've worked as an audio editor, I didn't have the time to pull the audio out and move it into a proper editor, so I was forced to edit in FCP, except a bit of work I did in BIAS Peak to edit one song -- I have to say FCP4 audio editing functionality was horrid, I couldn't get a clear waveform drawing and well... it was a mess, which resulted in clipped sloppy endings on some of the tighter edits -- that's the point where I decided I would just have to go all Bohemian and live with it ...I hope subsequent versions have gotten better...

I used Combustion for motion graphics, I actually had a lot more planned, but by this time I was really up against the clock, I knew if I added any kind of special effects(particles as they call them In Combustion) I would really meet up with the limitations of my hardware and there was a good chance I wouldn't finish in time, -- so I went with some simple moving text and even with that I had to guess on my timing and frames... with one render, there were a couple of mistakes in the bit that I did do, including a problem with aspect ratio that I decided to just 'go with'... but for the time I spent and with only one pass I was happy with what I achieved... made me feel like I finally was getting a real feel for Combustion ...

Lastly... I did my conversion for the web in Quicktime Pro -- I actually meant to convert it to a .mov(H.264 or whatever) which seemed to turn out top notch results in the way of look on Youtube in one previous experience with uploading to that site ... a tip off the top of my head is restricting the data rate to 2k bit/per second if you're saving as a .mov--that said, I got in a rush and did the MPEG4 because it produced a smaller file and I was anticipating having problems with getting it uploaded, the smaller the better(don't forget to check preserve aspect ratio) -- I did one pass, because I didn't have all week for multi-passes -- as for how it turned out on Youtube, could be better... but it certainly isn't that bad either, it's actually quite decent with only really showing its slip in a couple of spots - it's just something you have to play with I assume...

All and all, fun but mildly frustrating AND all my fault-- I've got to start reading my RSS feeds more often...instead of becoming 'juanita come lately' everytime...

Overall, a good experience to re-visit some really really dusty skills, I wish I could do it for a living --editing is just tons of fun, that's really where a movie gets made...

1. DV
2. iMovie HD for editing, iMovie '08 for importing to Youtube
3. PowerMac G5 1.6

The biggest challenge turned out to be importing to a video hosting site. Initially, I exported to Mpeg 4(h.264) and then tried importing to Youtube. The end result was completely garbled and blocky. I tried another video site and the visual quality was good but it cut off a couple of seconds of video at the beginning, which caused the audio to be out of sync.

I then tried the built-in export to Youtube feature in iMovie 08, which worked fine.

I wonder how many people who waited until the last minute to post missed the deadline because of these kinds of problems?

- Nobilis P4-2.3GHz, 2GB RAM, ~700GB HD, WinXP

The only "trick" I wound was to go through all of the clips using Media Player and a playlist. Using playlist allowed me to concentrate on content while the program cycled through the clips.

I used the DV footage and Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5 on an older dual processor white box windows machine with 2GB of RAM. It worked more or less flawlessly, right up until encoding for upload to youtube. Of course.

KnuteArneVedaa - instead of using an Image Matte, I created a title file in the Adobe Titler. I used the square shape tool to make two black rectangles at the top and the bottom. Run the newly created title across the whole project and it acts as a perfect matte.

The reason for the extra processing was because the smaller clips are more compressed. In my experience, Premiere doesn't play well with compressed clips and it has to work harder to use them in the timeline.

I started out with Kdenlive for Linux. It worked decently well, however although having the ability to output a varity of format the actual output was of bad or erraneous quality.

Then I tried Vegas Movie Studio for Windows which I'd used successfully some time earlier, but it crashed upon importing the clips.

So I ended up with Adobe Premiere for Windows. The only real problem I ran into here was when using an Image Matte to remove the timecodes; it seemed to fuck up fade-ins/outs, so I had to avoid using it on the entry that relied heavily on those. Another weird thing was that it seemed to use more processing power to work on the smaller MP4 clips then the larger DV ones.

Tips: do a test render to check the output quality long before you polish the masterpiece and certainly long before any deadline. :)

I used the DVD footage. I used SONY Vegas 7 on an Acer Extensa 6600 Centrino Laptop PC with 3GB RAM and an 80GB internal HD. I have an external 500MB LaCie drive so no problems with space for the footage. I found Sony Vegas 7 audio manipulation not as deep as in Final Cut. The fades can be adjusted time wise and levels but I feel there is more control editing fades and cross fades with Final Cut some how, you can kind of go real deep as much as you want with Final Cut. The overall editing didn't pose any problems, Vegas provides separate timelines a bit like Final Cut where you can choose the overlay, cut, montage or push the clips butt up if you want to. The text titling is a tad limiting in Vegas compared to LiveType which comes bundled with Final Cut but I kept the theme classic and therefore didn't consider the project needed any flashy titles or graphics.

One of the main problems I found was eliminating the timecode in the black outside the letterbox. I discovered the only way to get rid of that was to edit each clip, turn off the aspect ratio snapping and reduce the aspect ratio down just below the black for both upper and lower fields and thereby when rendered this generated new black over the existing black with timecode removed so it sorted this out. This is much easier to do in Final Cut where you can do this globally and within each clip with a simple setting. I've noticed in other entrants trailers they have attempted to remove the timecode but altered the aspect ratio by stretching it to 16:9 to remove the black but in doing so this meant the render compromises the quality of the original DV footage and produces a generation down if you will. I originally rendered my trailer in QuickTime Movie format without compression as a test to see ascertain the quality and at the same time to test the file size of the rendered file. Needless to say the original render came in at 7.5GB but the overall quality of both DV and audio was outstanding and a joy to view. I then opted for the 3MB QuickTime Movie format which compresses at best quality in exactly the same aspect ratio as the original source footage and in the correct NTSC and frame rate, etc. The eventual render came in just under 70MB which is 30MB under the specified 100MB limit by YouTube!

I noticed settings used for QuickTime compression gave a reasonable high quality visually, the digital video showed no signs of artifacts or interlacing but the audio was less successful and although the soundtrack seems fine the audio from the source files seems to have rendered with a phasing sound much like surround sound sounds like in stereo which definitely derives from the compression setting used and this is a pain.

Apart from the audio I'm relatively happy with the results and quite pleased with the the overall feel of my interpretation of the trailer. Mine version seems to conform to the thriller genre with suspense and I now feel I would have liked to include some humor and tried to capture what the film's narrative was all about but unfortunately I didn't know the story so I edited mine blind..

I will say, I felt compelled to strive for a quality in keeping with the work itself and with that in mind I attempted to do justice to the film and hopefully this is reflected in my attempt in my version of the trailer.

Great exercise though, really enjoyed myself.

A lot of the variations are down to the quality of rendering and compression used. Despite the compressors supplied with the programs out there one still needs to choose an appropriate compressor and setting conducive for the job in hand and sometimes this means experimenting until both the video is clean of artifacts and interlacing and the audio is clean of clips, pops and phasing.

Glad to be apart of this, thanks again for letting us play around with your work it's not everyday one can say you edited a trailer for Hollywood writer/director even if it was only for fun..

Good luck with the film itself, I'm sure it will be a success..

I used the mpeg-4 footage as it took less time to download. I then tried to use windows movie maker but it didn't accept those files. So i downloaded the trial of Adobe Premiere which was great and just imported all the files into that. One thing i really liked was being able to unlink the audio and video of the clips and move them around. My computer is a bit of a dinosaur and every so often froze for about a minute when editing the clips although thankfully i kept saving often! Really enjoyed the whole experience and i would definately try creating some more trailers and movie clips now.

Uggh. Stop already. YOU WROTE THE SONG. Congrats. It's very nice. But please stop using this board (and imdb, and everywhere else) as some sort of viral platform. Enough.

So a friend sent me this link about these two guys who made a bet about whether one of them could get as ripped as this old shot of Ryan. The guy looks pretty damn good - I think he got there, but go check it out.

http://www.amiripped.com

It looks lilke Ryan is bigger these days, but ripped wise I think those 2 pictures are pretty equal. They might be slightly different in certain areas, some better some worse on both ends.

GreeneStreet sells The Nines on back of Venice Critics Week screening
Non-Stop in Scandinavia, Playarte in Brazil and Ster Kinekor in South Africa among buyers committing to John August's directorial debut.

Jeremy Kay in Los Angeles
04 Sep 2007 05:15

Ariel Veneziano of GreeneStreet Films International has closed a slew of sales in Venice on John August's feature directorial debut The Nines.

Rights have gone to: Argentina (Telexcel), Brazil (Playarte), Eastern Europe (Blue Sky), Greece (Village Roadshow), Iceland (Sena), Israel (Forum Film), the Middle East (Italia Film), Portugal (Castelo Lopes), Scandinavia (Non-Stop), South Africa (Ster Kinekor) and Turkey (D Productions). Optimum holds UK rights.

"Coming in to Venice we expected a strong response to the film and we haven't been disappointed," Veneziano said. "We couldn't be more pleased with the sales this film is generating.

The film, which played in Critics Week at the Venice Film Festival, stars Ryan Reynolds as a troubled film star, a video game designer and a television show runner whose lives intertwine mysteriously. Hope Davis and Elle Fanning also star.

Newmarket Films holds domestic rights. August's screenwriting credits include Big Fish, Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, Charlie's Angels, and Go.
