After doing some research, I found out that the fate who spun the thread, Clotho, had a Roman equivalent--Nona, which means ninth. The fate Atropa/Morta carried shears, which may be what the scissors were alluding to. I suppose the knot-tying could represent the other fate, Lachesis/Decima, since she was the one who measured the thread. However Lachesis/Decima and Atropa/Morta represented the numbers 10 and 11 respectively. Since the movie dealt with creation and escapism into a generated world, I suppose Clotho/Nona--"nine" became the focus of the movie.
