Interpretation of the Hierarchy and the Conclusion

  1. I took the hierarchical numbering system to be an indication of progressive enlightenment. If we take for granted that it's based in our own world, and things such as Evolution and Enlightenment have the same histories in the world of "G", then stating that Chimps are a six and humans a seven implies that humans can eventually become koalas, then...well, for lack of a theoretical God, let's call 9s simply "creators"...with a ten being the unknowable creator of creators...

...so in the end, when the CG spectacle resolves itself into the eye of "M", I took it to mean that a representative part of "G" was alive within her, and possibly even that she had taken a large step toward becoming a 9.

Is this a happy ending? Maybe in the same way that Blue Velvet had a happy ending. Because, in truth, the Creator is now gone, and humanity is left to figure it out on its own...or was there a line of dialog indicating otherwise? I forget.

Regardless of my probable misinterpretations: Great work, Mr. August. If I hadn't already spent all of my tears on The Fountain, the pervading and conclusive beauty of your construction would have had me bawling through the credits.

I respect your opinion and agree with you on a few points. But you cant compare the ending of Blue Velvet without taking into the consideration its beginning the first few minutes that establish its tone. I left Blue velvet with the feeling that something had changed in jeffery and the ending and beginning perfectly compliment each other. That is not the case in the nines. Your comparison is weak but I still think the director's got across their original vision.

My opinion on the ending is a little of topic, from this post (since I have no complaints, only different views), so I'll just elaborate on it, elsewhere.

  3. Really? Something had changed in Jeffery at the end of Blue Velvet? I had the opposite impression. It seems to me that he starts off and ends with innocence, only the innocence in the end is due to a willed ignorance; I always found the end of Blue Velvet to be a bit creepy, and see similar possible undertones in The Nines (though certainly not by any overt intention...and not my interpretation, at all...I don't mind a happy ending).

  4. Also...I probably should have titled this post differently. I didn't think your elsewhere elaboration was off-topic at all, and didn't find it necessarily antithetical to my interpretation...but maybe that's just further evidence of my wrong thinking. ;-)

gotcha i'd have to do some meditating and not instinctively post but I can respect how you can focus on the smaller details while i saw it for the big picture. I unfortunately dont believe that this film will garner a huge following but I believe that something that isnt a commercial success will be studied and mental high fived when people understand things on a subliminal mental sub-transcendental level david lynch style and i think thats how well come to an understanding and the stress of not being able to figure out whats going on seeing amovie for what it is the first time having a strong enough emotion that you come back to it over and over that those are the movies that are good and the ones that dont ahve any effect are the bad ones. Criticsim should not take affect, as long as you take something away from it its all good. By the way youre still wrong about blue velvet go back and watch it i dare you!

  6. It's kind of funny, because I've been having this details vs. general overview argument with a friend, but I've been on the "general overview" side of it. I don't see my details as being incompatible with your thesis. I'm happy for you that you got so much out of the movie.
