Last night I decided to watch "The Nines". As with the majority of movies I watch, I had very little knowledge (in this case, I had no idea) what this movie was about. I did not see any trailers, nor did I read anything about its plot. I actually thought this movie was a comedy for the first 30 minutes of the film (the main actor (Ryan Renalds?) usually plays goofy comedic movie roles). Comon, didnt anyone else find it funny to see Ryan buying crack from kids and then asking a chubby crackwhore for help doing the crack absolutely hilarous? Perhaps I was still thinking this movie was going to be a comedy.

By the end of the first chapter, I realized this was no comedy movie. The movie felt like it was turning into a horror movie. As more time passed, I realized this movie was not a horror, nor a comedy, but rather something much much different. It was a mystery/thriller movie and my eyes were glued to the screen for the remainder of the movie.

I really need to watch the movie again. Ive been reading the forum postings on this site, and I am glad I am not the only one who is full of questions after watching this film. Some of my questions are:

-Is there a time-line in this film, and if so does it play an important role?
-In Part 1, Melissa and the neighbour are some-how dicieving our main character. Why are they doing this? Also, I think Melissa called the other woman a "nine" too.
-In part 3, the mute girl is looking into a video camcorder recording. It looks like she is watching the video from Part 2 in the movie? I think I remember seeing another instance of this too (I think we say Part 1 video in Part 2, or Part 2 video in Part 1, I cant exactly remember).
-In Part 3, when the main characer leaves his wife and mute child and meets up with the other girl, where did they go exactly? Wasnt this the part of the movie where they claimed the main character was a Crack Addict? That scene dissapears and we find our main character eventually come back to his wife + kid. This scene confused me.
-I was very confused about the scene in Part 1 where he is driving drunk and sees multiple people in his car with him. Also, in Part 1, what was that scratching noise at the door? And what about the guy that flashes, as if he is a ghost figure? And what was with all the mouse traps on teh floor?
-In Part 2, when they are screening the TV show, one of the guys looks at the main character through the black glass. Who is this guy? How can he see our main character? What is the significance of this?

I love mystery movies. They allow you to re-watch a film and pick up new things each time you re-watch. I always rate a movie based on how well it kept me interested throughout the movie... and this movie had me interested the whole time. I cant help but rate this movie a "nine" (remember in Part 2, they were looking for people who rated their show a 9?) :)

I had alot of fun watching this movie. I will likely be picking up the DVD of this film. I hope it contains a comentary track! :)

    Hi googlebot

I'm going to try and answer some of the questions for you having watched the film a couple times and listened to the audio commentary. By the way there will be a commentary on the dvd but there is also one you can download from John August's site here. You can put it onto a ipod device and listen to it while watching the movie.

Ok in Part 1 when we see all the people in the car with him, those are his other characters from other worlds overlapping into his current world. Though we don't know that until later. It might be an aspect of the drugs and alcohol he is taking as well. Something I wondered was when he rang up saying that his bellybutton was missing, at the time I took it to be him off his head on drugs and seeing things. Now i've watched it i'm thinking that he subconciously removed it himself which is kinda cool.

The guy that flashes is Gavin, the tv guy. Its because the worlds are beginning to collapse and aspects from the other worlds that G has made are overlapping into each other. That is why we see scenes from Part 2 in Part 3 on the video camera and how Gabriels daughter is able to leave Part 3 and appear in Part 1 with Gary at the busstop (she is asking him why he left them at the car)

The guy at the tv screening is also a Nine like G and S. That is why he can see him through the glass. He also appears in Part 1 as the guy who puts the electronic tag on Gary. The woman that Gary picks up in Part 1 is a nine as well and makes a short appearance at the end of Part 2. They both appear together at the end of Part 3. You find out at the end that they also were part of S's plan to make G realise that he needs to go home.

In Part 1 Melissa was not intentionally deceiving Gary, what she tells him is the truth. The neighbour Sarah (?) is basically trying to get him away from Melissa in each part as he seems to be really attached to her and she just wants him to go home and stop creating/living these worlds.

I think there mousetraps were there because Gary heard noises from the roof and Melissa said they could be rats so he put mousetraps down. I think i remember from the commentary that the scratching noises are Gavin's (Part 2) pugs, which are again overlapping into Part 1.

In Part 3 when Gabriel and Sierra are walking they are initally walking towards her car so he can get help to fix his car. Except that she is lying and is just leading him away to talk to him.

Hope that answered some of your questions, though i might be wrong on some of the points. It really is a film that you can watch many different times and see new details each time.

Also i finally understand why this forum is called the Sevens!
